Technology key in keeping firefighters safe
Monday, October 21, 2019

The firefighting industry is under attack. There’s a silent threat stalking these brave men and women long after the flames of a structure fire have been extinguished. Over the last decade or so, we’ve learned that a cornucopia of carcinogens can reside in bunker gear.

A recent article published in American Laundry News looked at the impact cancer has had on the firefighting ranks and the various changes in how gear is handled. Bill Brooks, UniMac’s North American sales manager and also a firefighter, weighs in for the article and sizes up the threat.

“Today, we know the dangers that lurk in the gear,” Brooks says. “Ours is a dangerous profession, and that danger lives on in our soot-covered gear well after the flames are extinguished.”

The article looks at how technology is a key tool in the fight against cancer in firefighters and streamlines documentation that gear is being cleaned and maintained properly in accordance with NFPA 1851 guidelines.
